Football governing body cites logistical challenges as Iran’s appeal to shift matches to Mexico is turned down amid rising geopolitical tensions.

FIFA has rejected Iran’s request to move its upcoming World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico, maintaining that all fixtures will proceed as originally scheduled. The decision was confirmed by Claudia Sheinbaum, who stated that logistical complexities made any venue change impractical.

Last month, the Iran Football Federation formally appealed for relocation, citing security concerns linked to escalating tensions between United States and Iran. However, FIFA made it clear that the tournament schedule would remain unchanged, leaving no room for adjustments.

Speaking at a press conference in Mexico City, Sheinbaum emphasized that altering venues at this stage would significantly disrupt tournament planning. FIFA has not issued a detailed public statement but has reaffirmed its commitment to the existing schedule.

The situation has drawn heightened attention as diplomatic strains between the two nations continue to grow. Iranian officials have expressed concern over player safety, with federation president Mehdi Taj even hinting at a possible boycott if adequate security measures are not guaranteed.

Despite these concerns, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has assured that Iran will participate in the tournament and that preparations are progressing as planned.

According to the official draw, Iran is placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. All three of Iran’s group-stage matches are scheduled to be held in the United States, with two matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.
